Respite Care — In-Home and Out-of-Home

Family caregivers often carry years of responsibility without a genuine pause. Respite care exists so they can rest, attend to their own health, or handle life's obligations — and so the person they support is safe and comfortable while they do.

What this support looks like

Respite care gives unpaid family caregivers time away while the person they support receives capable care. Respite can be provided in the person's home or in another licensed setting. We work toward consistency — the same familiar caregivers where possible — so the person feels at ease and the family can actually step away rather than worry.

Examples of daily activities

  • Covering a family caregiver's time so they can attend an appointment or rest
  • Following the person's usual routines while family is away
  • Staying with the person during an overnight or weekend break
  • Providing companionship, meals, and activities during the respite period

These are illustrations, not a fixed list. Support is planned with the person and may differ from what's shown here.

Person-centered benefits

  • Reduces caregiver burnout and health risks for family members
  • Helps sustain home-based care over the long term
  • The person keeps familiar routines with familiar people
  • Families can attend to their own needs without arranging everything themselves

Eligibility for this service is determined through a person's assessment, authorization, and funding. Respite availability and setting (in-home or out-of-home) depend on the person's authorization. Lakeland Health Services does not guarantee waiver eligibility, payment coverage, or specific outcomes.
