Basic Support Services

Night Supervision

Nights can be the hardest hours to manage alone. Night supervision means someone is present, awake or on site, so families can sleep and the person is not alone in an emergency.

What this support looks like

Night supervision provides awake or asleep overnight support in the person's home. Staff may stay awake to monitor safety, respond to needs during the night, support nighttime routines, and complete delegated tasks as authorized. This service can benefit people at risk of wandering, people who have seizures or other nighttime concerns, and people who simply cannot safely be alone overnight.

Examples of daily activities

  • Evening routine support, including preparing for bed
  • Staying awake to monitor for safety overnight
  • Responding when a person wakes and needs assistance
  • Preparing a light breakfast and supporting the morning routine
  • Documenting the night and communicating changes to the care team

These are illustrations, not a fixed list. Support is planned with the person and may differ from what's shown here.

Person-centered benefits

  • Rest for family members who otherwise sleep lightly, listening for sounds
  • Faster response if something happens overnight
  • Consistent overnight routines that support better sleep
  • Documented observations that help the team adjust support
